Benefits for Baby

Start the day by making learning the alphabet fun with this set of brightly coloured illustrated flash cards by Two Little Ducklings. These Alphabet Flashcards display both upper and lower case letters along with beautiful illustrations. Use these flashcards to increase interaction with children, aid communication skills and help foster an investigative mindset. Flashcards are a fantastic tool. They are portable, efficient, and versatile. Howard Gardner, an American developmental psychologist suggests that each individual has a distinct learning style. He categorised them into three main areas – visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. Using flashcards not only helps to develop and improve the connection of synapses in your child’s developing brain, it also appeals to various learning styles.

Set up this activity while your little one is sleeping. Pick one of the flashcards and display it on your baby's play table (if they have one). Now, next to the card, lay out 4 or 5 items from around your home that start with that letter. When your little one is awake, fed and ready to play, sound out the name of each item, emphasising the first sound. Now you could draw each item together (don't be offended—they will probably just scribble over your whatever you draw!). If your little one is up for the challenge, you could show them how you write the letter and then help them trace it.

Invest in your baby’s early learning, literacy and alphabet recognition by inviting them to experience these soft-to-touch Papoose Felt Alphabet Letters. This 26-piece hand-felted letter set is a beautiful, tactile tool for learning through play. The warm, natural-hued letters can be used in multitude of hands-on ways that go way beyond basic alphabet recognition. For example, sorting, categorising, spelling, matching and letter-sound activities are all brought to life with this handmade, textured resource! Letter recognition with lowercase letters is the best way to start teaching the alphabet as it's the most common way we see it.

Firstly, show your toddler the letter and encourage them to hold, touch and explore it. (Some babies may even like to try and trace the shape of the letter with their finger). Name the letter: "This is the letter "B". It makes the /b/ sound. (Fun fact: /b/ is what's known as a phoneme: a visual symbol to represent one specific linguistic sound) Highlight the sound: Show how you use your mouth and tongue to form the sound. Talk about what you might look for: "Let's go find something that starts with "B": A ball?! A book?! A bag?!" Consolidation: Bring back all the items you have collected and talk about the sound and letter again, encouraging your little one to touch the letter and try to mimic the sounds you make. Resolution: Help them internalise the experience with some free play time with the objects.

Then take their learning of letter recognition even further with this engaging wooden Lowercase Tracing Board. It is the perfect tool to help your little one learn how to identify and then write the alphabet in a fun tactile way. This Montessori inspired tracing board comes with a wooden stylus and is carefully designed with symbolic arrows to help your little one form their letters in the correct way (starting at the top). Tracing is a valuable tool as it improves hand-eye coordination, dexterity and spatial awareness. Tracing letters can be a good way to memorise them and learn to write them clearly, and as long as you keep it light and fun, it's never too early to start!

Place a white piece of paper over your lowercase tracing board and tape it down with masking tape. Using the Honeysticks Crayons, make rubbings of one letter at a time. Then talk with your little one about what has appeared on the paper. They can then use their fingers to trace the rubbings. Extend this by asking them to connect what they have learnt previously by helping them match the letters on the flashcard to what they see on the board.

Finish the day by getting colourful and creative with the all-natural eco Honeysticks Crayons, made in New Zealand from 100% pure beeswax and food grade pigments. These short and stubby crayons have been designed specifically for 1-3 year olds making them perfect for little hands to grasp. Crayons open up a whole world of benefits for our little ones. Fine and gross motor strength, sensory processing, pencil grasp, line awareness, hand-eye coordination, dexterity, endurance, self-confidence, creativity, task completion, and learning objectives like colour identification, and colour matching are just a few of the benefits of using this simple tool.

Display some of the Alphabet Flash Cards and offer your little one the Honeysticks Crayons. Encourage them to draw what they see on the flash card, as you model the activity. Can they copy the letter or the picture? Can they use the crayons to make the shapes of some of the letters they see? Good ones to start with are E, F, Z, A, H & L. Remember, forming their first letters may still be a couple of years away, but it's never too early to have some lettering fun!
